METRANS and INTERPORT are modernizing an intermodal terminal in Košice, Slovakia, creating a key hub in Eastern Europe's transport infrastructure with dual-gauge infrastructure and advanced logistics capabilities by 2027. The € multi-million project combines METRANS' expertise in rail logistics with INTERPORT's regional knowledge, enhancing connectivity between the EU and Ukraine.
Eastern Europe's Transport Infrastructure Gets a Boost with Modernized Terminal in Slovakia
A joint project between METRANS, the rail logistics subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), and INTERPORT Servis s.r.o. aims to modernize an intermodal terminal near the eastern Slovak city of Košice.
New Terminal Set to Become Key Hub in Eastern Europe's Transport Infrastructure
The new terminal, named TIP Košice (Terminál Intermodálnej Prepravy – Intermodal Transport Terminal), will serve as a model for integrated logistics development, sustainable growth, and regional connectivity. The partnership between METRANS and INTERPORT will create a new ecosystem for international logistics, strengthening the economically vibrant region at the eastern border of the European Union.
Partnership Leverages Strengths of Both Organizations
METRANS brings decades of expertise in European rail logistics to the table, while INTERPORT provides in-depth regional knowledge and development capabilities. Together, they will transform the site into a multifunctional logistics hub with one of Slovakia's most advanced intermodal terminals at its core.
“We are witnessing highly dynamic development in this region where the METRANS Group has been operating since 2008. The new TIP Košice is not just expanding capacity - we are creating a future-proof hub that connects East and West, EU and Ukraine as well as tradition and innovation." – Peter Kiss, CEO of METRANS
Dual-Gauge Infrastructure for Efficient Transshipment
A unique feature of the terminal is its dual-gauge infrastructure, which combines standard and broad-gauge tracks. The two gantry cranes will enable efficient transshipment of goods arriving via broad-gauge rail – such as from Ukraine – and their seamless transfer onto trains operating on the European standard-gauge network.
Benefits Beyond Efficient Freight Handling
Beyond efficient freight handling, the new logistics ecosystem is expected to deliver significant benefits, including shortened supply chains, deployment of digital tools for managing logistics flows, creation of new employment opportunities for local communities, enhancement of infrastructure and environmental standards, and a platform for connecting businesses within and beyond the region.
“Our goal is to make Košice a central hub of the new logistics corridor between the European Union and Ukraine. Together with METRANS, we are transforming this site into a modern terminal that will offer not only state-of-the-art technical equipment but also a strategic location for the future of European logistics.” – Ľubomír Fronk, CEO of INTERPORT Servis s.r.o.
Expansion Scheduled to be Completed by 2027
The METRANS terminal in Košice has been part of the European METRANS network since 2008. The present site currently comprises nearly 50,000 m² of terminal area. The new project will expand capacities with new handling and storage places, as well as two modern rail cranes to make freight handling even more efficient. The complete expansion is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
